Who were the Monuments Men? The Monuments Men were a group of Allied soldiers asked with finding and protecting the stolen and misplaced art from World War Two and specifically the Nazi's art looting campaign that took place all throughout Europe.
The Stash: Altaussee Salt Mine
The Altaussee Salt Mine is a miles deep mine located in the mountains of Austria. During WWll, the Hitler ordered that his art collection be stashed deep in the salt mine. The mine was ideal for hiding art for many reasons. First, the art was so deep inside the mountain that it was protected from the destruction of the war. No bombs or gunfire could damage the precious art. Secondly, the mine had ideal conditions for storing art. Most of all, however, was the discreet location of the mine that helped Hitler's stolen art evade detection until after the war.
